Cruising by the Citadel Hill space of Previous West Austin just lately, I noticed this stunning 1910 house with a sky-blue door and trendy landscaping. I hit the brakes for a better look.
The home sits atop a entrance yard terraced with Corten metal and board-formed concrete partitions. A deep hellstrip mulched with gravel incorporates a grassy planting of bulletproof crimson yucca (Hesperaloe parviflora), Mexican feathergrass (Nassella tenuissima), woolly stemodia (Stemodia lanata), and whale’s tongue agave (Agave ovatifolia).
That whale’s tongue agave is a stunner, and harmoniously set off with woolly stemodia groundcover. No deer on this neighborhood, so the crimson yuccas look attractive with arched wands of coral flowers. And what a view! An artfully pruned heritage dwell oak frames the dome of the Texas Capitol.
Hummingbirds have been darting from flower to flower, stealing sips of nectar and chasing one another off. I really like how the whale’s tongue agave echoes the delicate blue of the entrance door.
Floating steps make a proper flip at a metal planter field dotted with small golden barrel cacti. Alongside the inspiration, a metal terraced mattress incorporates a frothy planting of sedge and palmetto — perhaps silver noticed?
The sedge continues throughout the best facet of the yard. No conventional garden in any respect, I feel. The home faces southwest, which suggests the sedge receives just about a full day of solar. I’d like to know which selection it’s.
I feel this entrance yard could be very properly designed and interesting with a restrained palette of native and tailored vegetation. Plus the home itself is a Texas charmer. Bravo!
