Is 1.8 million acres sufficiently big for you? That’s the scale of sprawling Grand Staircase-Escalante Nationwide Monument in southern Utah, one among our stops on our spring RV journey out west.

Utah felt like one large park to us — it accommodates 5 nationwide parks plus 8 nationwide monuments — with jaw-dropping vistas of snow-capped mountains, pink rock mesas, striated canyons, and weirdly shaped hoodoos at each bend within the street.

In late April, spring wildflowers added patches of purple that popped towards the terracotta rock.

The staircase of Grand Staircase (“escalante” is Spanish for “climbing”) refers to an unlimited space of geologic uplift that “steps up” from the Grand Canyon in Arizona to Bryce Canyon in Utah. Uplift and erosion make it potential to learn the historical past of the earth right here and see how its local weather and wildlife developed over the ages.

You may’t assist feeling small at Grand Staircase, only a tiny blip in Earth’s staggeringly historical historical past. Mountain ranges and seas have risen and fallen, a tropical local weather evaporated to abandon. Unimaginable creatures roamed this altering panorama for hundreds of thousands of years after which died out, making room for brand new life types. The earth endures, altering in time with its personal eons-per-tick geologic clock, with or with out us.

It’s a spot to look, ponder, marvel at, and open your self to.
